Discover Rainbow Bridge

Journey north of Antelope Point Marina on Lake Powell and boat to one of the most popular destinations in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Rainbow Bridge National Monument. It is the world's largest known natural bridge - nearly as tall as the Statue of Liberty (290' vs 305') and over 300,000 visitors a year take the short hike up to this spectacular natural icon.

Getting to the bridge by water requires a powerboat, personal watercraft or tour boat (houseboats cannot easily access the narrow canyon that can have pretty rough waters on busy days). Leave your powerboat or personal watercraft at the courtesy dock and walk the approximate one-mile trek back in time. As you follow along the trail, note the layers in the sandstone walls along the way. Picture this area 200 million years ago, as the sands of a great desert accumulated layer by layer, forming the sandstone that would over time be carved into Rainbow Bridge. History has a way of surrounding those who visit here, and while gazing up from the edge of the small meandering Bridge Creek, you may find yourself contemplating those who have stood here before.

May 30, 2010 will mark the 100th anniversary of Rainbow Bridge becoming a National Monument.

Teddy Roosevelt once described it by writing "This great natural bridge, so recently 'discovered' by white men, has for ages been known to the Indians." Today, many say that this special place truly does span cultures in a sacred landscape.

The Eagles Have Landed

If you're interested in seeing Bald Eagles up close (well, as close as you can get with binoculars), then Lake Mead and Lake Mohave would be great locations to catch a glimpse or two, or three. The eagles have indeed landed there in a big way... just in time to be counted by the 45 volunteers and biologists on boats who came to scan the lake's shorelines with binoculars this year.

As a result of their efforts, the Nevada Department of Wildlife reported a big increase in the eagle count. The number was 163 for 2010 which compares to only 48 in 2000. This year's count was also part of the National Bald Eagle Survey which has been done annually since the bald eagle was officially "de-listed" from the endangered species act in 2007.

The Lake Mead and Mohave area has long been an important migratory stopover for these eagles. Over time, they have been extending their stays and have made the lakes an important "wintering ground." (Just like us houseboaters.) This eagle behavior gives new meaning to the term, "snowbird." (couldn't resist)

What's the best place to see these bald eagles? From the top deck of a houseboat of course! Don't forget to bring your binoculars and camera up with you. The eagles are there, perched along the rocky shorelines, just waiting to "soar" above you with a wave of their wings. All you have to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

Lake Mead
Up 3' This Year

This photo was taken on January 14, 2010.

We all know that no one knows what the future will bring to water levels at Lake Mead, but the reservoir elevation has risen to 1099.20 since the December readings.

Keep in mind, even with lower water levels, there is still a lot of water surface to play on, and some great new beaches to land on as well.

They're bitin' big at Lake Mohave

Here is one angler you might want to take along next time you go fishing on Lake Mohave. Galen Tsabetsays pulled out two big beauties in 10' of water with his own homemade plugs. "You could feel the rainbow fish in its' belly" he was reported as saying as he placed the "big one" on the scale.

The Cottonwood Cove Marina staff weighed the two fish in at 28 and 35 lbs. Galen's picture (along with his fish) and stats are now on the "wall of fishing fame" at the marina's gift store.

Portside Musing

"I've never understood the cold. Don't get me wrong, I understand that there's a reason for cold weather (I'm sure there's got to be), but my big problem with cold weather is with sunny days. It can be 25 degrees outside without a cloud in the sky and the sun still shining bright. To me, that's just the sun being lazy. If there was a green light at an intersection and the person in front of you was still stopped, you'd probably be a little upset, especially if the light turns back to red before you can make your way through. The same applies with the sun. It's just sitting there, doing nothing, having a good ol' time. I bet it's flirting with the moon. For up to 6 months at a time. That's a lot of space-flirtation; too much if you ask me."
